What is the Fathers of the Next Generation project?

It is an Indigenous-led and parent-driven research project to create a parenting program for Indigenous fathers and Two-Spirit parents. There are 3 phases of the study. See the infographic for more information about the phases.

Why are you doing this project?

Indigenous men and Two-Spirit folks take a journey to prepare for their role as a parent. But, parenting programs developed for and by Indigenous fathers and Two-Spirit parents are missing.

We want to fill this gap.

The project will last 3 years, starting in September 2022.
An Advisory Board, which includes a local Elder or Knowledge Holder, Six Nations parents, representatives from each community organization partner, and researchers.
We will gather knowledge through interviews, workshops, and online surveys. We're looking for individuals from the Indigenous community to participate.
Yes. This project is driven by the Tekani teyothata'tye kaswenta, also known as the Two Row Wampum.
The Two Row Wampum is an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy, including the local Six Nations of the Grand River community, and Dutch settlers.
The rows of the Wampum symbolize a commitment to friendship and peace that is to last forever.
We are using the tradition of the Wampum as a guide for researchers and Indigenous communities entering into a research partnership.
